Projects
All of our on-site projects are unique and, therefore, require individual and widely diverse approaches. While we are the main partners for some initiatives, we might only provide secondary help to others. All projects have one thing in common: They use tourism as a tool for sustainable development!
In that sense we are always interested in new projects anywhere in the world, where we believe that our work can make a tangible difference. Please contact our Projects Coordinator, Susy Karammel, for more information (susy@sd-tourism.org). And if you would like to join one of our project teams as an intern or volunteer, please have a look at our Membership page for further information.
While any subject dealing with tourism and sustainable development is of interest to us in general, our personal work and research are mainly dedicated to four major areas:
Community-based tourism (CBT) initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond
- Increased benefits for local people from tourism development ranging from mass-tourism (e.g. all-inclusive resorts etc) to small scale tourism (e.g. community-based tourism)
- National policy strategies to maximize the poverty-alleviating potential of tourism
- Technical and personal support for marketing activities of small incoming operators in new and emerging destination countries (e.g. Rwanda, Ghana)
